THE LEOPARD MAN
There was once a young man who decided to be the best hunter in his village. He practiced throwing his spear and learned how to stalk animals with great skill, but he always had bad luck. When he went hunting he scarcely killed any animals, so he became the laughing stock of the village. Everyone laughed and made fun of him.
In spite of that, several girls in the village admired him and wanted to marry him. However, no father wanted to give his daughter to a hunter who nearly always failed. The young man was afraid that he could live the rest of his life alone. He felt that something must be done, so he decided to go and talk it over with his grandmother. She advised him to go and see a magician, since she believed that the evil spirits in the forest were unkind to the young man.
So the young man went to the magician.
“What can I do to help you?” Asked the magician.
“I want to be a famous hunter”, said the young man. “When I am successful, I'll probably find a maiden to marry me.”
The magician advised the young man to think carefully. He said the young man should be happy with his life, since that was God's plan. Since the young man insisted, however, the magician gave him a drink of strong medicine which made him fall into a deep sleep. When he got up, the magician asked him to go back to his village.
Once in his village, the young man felt very strong. He took his gun and went to the forest. Then suddenly he found himself transformed into a leopard, and he killed many animals before he changed back to a young man.
When he went home, everyone was surprised. Nobody knew the secret. The young man became famous and the Chief of the village gave him his daughter as a wife.
One day the young man went hunting and was transformed into a leopard. A hunter saw the leopard and shot it.
Before he died, the leopard-man remembered the words of the magician, “Be happy with your life as God planned it”. But it was too late
