SECTION C: READING COMPREHENSION (10 marks)
Read the passage and answer the questions below.
Excessive alcohol consumption can have negative effects on the person drinking, people around them, and the community in which they live. Alcohol abuse affects only consumers heath but also their work performance and wages, their family and economic lives.
Drinking too much alcohol is too bad for people’s heath. People who drink too much alcohol experience lever problems and can develop lung diseases. Furthermore, if a person drinks a great quantity of alcohol and drive after wards, he is likely to have an accident while driving back home.
Alcohol consumption can affect work performance. In many companies, peoples who drink a lot are more likely to leave that other employers. They are also more likely to promote accidents at the workplace. Other workers perceive that heavy drinkers have lower performance, problems in personal relationships and lack of self-direction. They may eventually lose their jobs.
Alcohol can also affect family life. Drinking can impair how a person performs as a parent as well as how they contribute to the functioning of the household. It can have lasting effect on their partner and children. For instance, through home accidents and violence. If a woman drinks during pregnancy, her unborn baby can be affected negatively. After birth, parental drinking can lead to child abuse and numerous other impacts on the environment other consequences of drinking on family life can include substantial mental health problems for other family members such as anxiety, fear and depression. Drinking outside the home can mean less time spent at home with the children.
Furthermore, there may be financial consequences with drinking too much alcohol. In fact, apart from money spent on drinks, heavy drinkers may suffer other economic problems such as lower wages and loss of employment opportunities, increased medical expenses and decreased eligibility for loans.
