Utilisation de "nothing" et "anything" en Anglais
Introduction
En anglais, nothing et anything appartiennent à la famille des indéfinis. Ils se traduisent tous les deux par « rien » en français, mais ils ne s’emploient pas dans les mêmes contextes.
1- Définition et emploi
A. NOTHING
Nothing signifie « rien ».
C’est un sujet affirmatif qui nie en lui-même. La phrase contenant nothing est affirmative en apparence, mais en réalité elle est négative dans le sens.
Exemple :
Nothing is more beautiful than the sunrise in the Sahara.
Rien n’est plus beau que le lever du soleil dans le Sahara.
Nothing grows in the desert without water.
Rien ne pousse dans le désert sans eau.
Remarque : Avec nothing, on n’utilise pas not dans la même phrase, car la négation est déjà exprimée.
B- ANYTHING
Anything signifie aussi « rien », mais son emploi dépend du type de phrase :
-Dans les phrases négatives, anything veut dire rien.
-Dans les phrases interrogatives, anything veut dire quelque chose.
-Dans les phrases affirmatives, anything veut dire n’importe quoi.
Exemples :
Phrase négative :
I didn’t see anything in the forest of Congo.
Je n’ai rien vu dans la forêt du Congo.
Phrase interrogative :
Did you hear anything during the festival in Bamako?
As-tu entendu quelque chose pendant le festival de Bamako ?
Phrase affirmative :
You can eat anything in this African market, it’s all delicious.
Tu peux manger n’importe quoi dans ce marché africain, tout est délicieux.
2- Différence essentielle
Nothing = « rien »
utilisé comme sujet affirmatif qui nie tout seul.
Anything = « rien / quelque chose / n’importe quoi »
dépend du type de phrase (négative, interrogative, affirmative).
En résumé :
Nothing = négation directe.
Anything = dépend du contexte, plus souple.
3- Comparaison avec illustrations africaines
-Avec nothing :
Nothing can break the unity of African people.
Rien ne peut briser l’unité des peuples africains.
Nothing is better than drinking palm wine under a mango tree in Cameroon.
Rien n’est meilleur que de boire du vin de palme sous un manguier au Cameroun.
-Avec anything :
Négatif : The hunter didn’t catch anything in the savanna.
Le chasseur n’a rien attrapé dans la savane.
Interrogatif : Did you learn anything from the story of Sundiata Keita?
As-tu appris quelque chose de l’histoire de Soundiata Keïta ?
Affirmatif : You can ask me anything about African philosophy.
Tu peux me demander n’importe quoi sur la philosophie africaine.
4- Astuce pour retenir
Quand tu veux dire « rien » directement, utilise nothing.
Quand tu veux laisser une ouverture (négative, question, possibilité), utilise anything.
