SECTION C: COMPREHENSION (10 marks)

Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow.
The productive activities in a country form the economy of that nation. Economics is a social science because it’s concerned with the scarce resources used by the members of the society who choose them to satisfy their needs. The study of an economy involves the analysis of the creation, the allocation, the exchange, the distribution and the consumption of goods or services. An economist is a scientist who objectively describes and explains production, showing our numerous everyday needs.
Picking fruits, fishing and hunting are subsistence activities whereas manufacturing, cattle breeding and farming have become market oriented; such socially organized occupations create goods to be exchanged for money. In industry, an entrepreneur, if he has got capital or can borrow from a bank, will combine it with other factors such as technical knowledge, land and labour to make machines, objects or food. He can only do so if there is a profit motive or self-interest..
Producers often anticipate on our strong desire for goods or services. Our insatiable appetites are deconcentrated on basic needs such as food, shelter and clothes. Demand for these is almost inelastic because we go on buying them despite their high prices. The satisfactory power of non-essential wants such as music and cinema changes with circumstances. The amount of pleasure or enjoyment derived from a cigarette or a book is influenced by time, place and taste.
Smoking cannot rank first in a non-smoker's scale of preferences. Even the smokers adjust the number of cigarettes they buy to market conditions. At a given time, if prices rise, they will reduce their consumption. The cigarette manufacturers will cut the quantities for sale in the market. Supply, like demand, is therefore elastic. The law of supply and demand reflects those facts: a rise in prices, other things being equal (O.T.B.E.)
