SECTION C: COMPREHENSION. (10 marks)
Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow.
The United Nations Organization has dedicated a day to sports and physical education. The 6th of April is therefore known to be a famous day. This is because sport has a personal and global importance.
Personally, sports help to prevent diseases such as hypertension, diabetes etc… Being a recreational activity, it also helps for relaxation after a long period of labour.
Globally, sports can contribute to the consolidation of national unity and integration. This can be done by recruiting players or athletes from different regions into the same team. The Cameroon national team can be cited as example to this effect. Furthermore, it can reinforce the fight against discrimination worldwide. Thus, if players of different origins and continents regroup themselves into a solid team, there will be no way to discriminate one another. Their only goal will be to grab as many victories as possible.
Doing so contributes to promote equality among people. In addition, sports can greatly contribute to the promotion of gender equality. This is a situation where both male and female genders are allowed to do the same sporting activities. We can cite the case of Sarah ETONGUE at the mount Cameroon race of hope, Aboudi ONGUENE and many others at the football level. These are the reasons why the former secretary general of the United Nations Organization; BAN KHI MOON usually says that: “Sports is the bed-rock of peace and global development”.
