SECTION C: COMPREHENSION.
Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow.
It is always an interesting experience to go to the market. Seeing so many people from different origins and cultures is quite exciting. It becomes more exciting when you see them bargaining about the price of goods and services. In most african countries, the market is made-up of many sectors. There are places exclusively meant for the sale pigs and goats. Others are meant to sell chickens and eggs. In Senegal, in Dakar market for example, you can find citizens from all over Africa. Some of them sell jewelries, hand-made shoes, and wax wrappers. The people here live in peace and harmony despite their cultural differences.
In Lagos market in the other hand, you find many people selling local shoes and dresses. Some sell cassava, and Egussi, necessary to make delicious dishes.
It is worth noting that a market is a business area which generates income to the vendors, and taxes to the government. It also reduces poverty, and unemployment. Due to exportation, a productive business arena helps to increase the nation’s wealth. To this effect, African states must imperatively improve their transport infrastructures, reduce custom duties, and give subsidings to start-up enterprises. Only then can Africa become a great and promising continent.
Adapted from African economic bulletins of the IMF (FMI), 1998.
