SECTION C: READING COMPREHENSION (10 marks)
Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow.
Malaria is only transmitted among humans by bites from the female anopheles mosquitoes. They carry the disease in the blood sucked from an infected person and transmit it via their saliva into another blood. Rainfall, temperature and humidity affect mosquitoes and the rate of transmission of malaria. Most people get malaria just after the rainy season.
Symptoms only appear a few weeks after a mosquito bite. The first symptoms are fever, a headache, shivering and vomiting. These symptoms may be mild and difficult to recognize at first.
About half of the world’s population is at risk of contracting malaria. Most malaria cases and deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa. People in Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and some parts of Europe are also affected.
Human beings develop partial immunity to malaria after years of exposure to mosquitoes. This reduces the risk of severe attack. Many children in Africa die from malaria because they have not built up any resistance to the disease. Pregnant women, people who suffer from HIV/AIDS and international travellers also run a high risk of getting malaria.
The early diagnosis and treatment of malaria reduces the effect of the disease and prevent deaths. New drugs are being developed to treat malaria all the time as malaria becomes resistant to drugs after a while. Scientist are also working on a vaccine that they hope will be used to prevent malaria infections in the future.
